Middleburgh NY Residents Against Industrial Wind Turbines

On May 12, 2022, the Middleburgh Town Board voted to change the zoning laws to prohibit industrial scale wind turbines. We, the residents of Middleburgh, are extremely grateful to all the members of the Board for their thorough review of the issue. We are appreciative of the time they spent carefully studying it and patiently listening to our concerns.

THANK YOU TOWN BOARD MEMBERS!!!

We are residents of Middleburgh, NY opposed to the industrial wind turbines being proposed for our town. These turbines will hurt our property values, ruin our scenic views, kill wildlife, and have negative effects on our health and environment.

Borrego Solar, Inc., a large private California-based company, proposed to build two industrial wind turbines on Lawton Hollow Road in Middleburgh, NY. The turbines would have been up to 790 feet in height similar to the Vestas V150 4.2MW turbine they are proposing to build in the nearby town of Glen, NY. It is important to note that Borrego Solar, Inc. has never even installed a wind turbine before.

The tallest building in Albany is the 44 story Erastus Corning Building standing at 610 feet. The proposed turbines would be higher than this skyscraper and could be more than twice the size of the Statue of Liberty that is only 310 feet.

Lower Property Values

Studies have shown that homes within several miles of industrial wind turbines may lose over 50% of their value. Any person buying a home will obviously choose a home that is nowhere near a turbine if presented with similar choices. Would you buy a home near an industrial wind turbine if another similar house was available somewhere else?

Forbes.com has reported that "Many members of the Real Estate and Appraisal businesses, however, have been clear that wind power DOES impact property values."

Scenic Views From Lawton Hollow Road, Middleburgh, NY

This beautiful rural road leads to the top of a hill with sprawling views of the Catskills. The massive industrial wind turbines will be placed near the top of the hill and will rise above it by hundreds of feet. The turbines could be visible from 15 miles away and will destroy our precious idyllic rural views. Once they place these two towers many more could follow. We must put a stop to these turbines now before they ruin our hills for generations to come. Let's leave our children and grandchildren the pristine and beautiful views that we inherited from our parents.

Earthquake Swarms

Many residents in the vicinity of the proposed turbine site are served by the Berne NY post office, since the Town of Berne is only a few miles distant. Berne was the site of five “earthquake swarms” between 2007 and 2011, with each swarm consisting of four to twenty-four recorded earthquakes with magnitudes from 1 to 3.1 on the Richter scale. Many were felt by residents near the site. These swarms were the subject of a 2019 article in the scientific journal “GeoWorld” titled “Seismotectonic Implications of the Berne earthquake swarms west-southwest of Albany New York”. The article stated that “Two possibly related explanations exist for the Berne earthquake swarms….Both models involve re-activation of rift-related faults.” and “The Berne swarms may be evidence that these faults are seismically capable and, if so, could sustain a maximum event on the order of 5.7-6.6, based on fault segment length.” We are not geologists, but have misgivings about permitting the tallest structures in upstate New York outside of Manhattan to be constructed in such a potentially unstable area, especially one with largely karst (porous rock) terrain.

Wind Turbine Accidents, Fires and Deaths

The dark side of the wind industry is the several thousands of documented cases of serious accidents, fires and deaths that they cause. These include documented cases of turbines falling over, blades flying off, injuries to workers and the public, and reported fatalities. Lawton Hollow Road is a hard-to-access rural road. A large wind turbine fire can lead to a forest fire during our dry season. Our local volunteer fire departments could be overwhelmed by such a large fire.

Wind Turbines Kill Birds and Bats

Industrial wind turbines likely kill millions of birds and bats worldwide every year. However, the wind industry in the U.S. refuses to release the exact numbers. The reason? The wind industry treats such data as 'trade secrets' and generally does not share them with the public or conservation organizations. The wind industry is hiding this information from us to prevent us from learning the true number of birds and bats the turbines kill each year.

Health Problems and The "Flicker" Effect

Researchers have established a link between wind turbines and symptoms such as migraines, earaches, tinnitus, eye pressure, dizziness, nausea and sleeplessness. The turbines emit low-frequency sound waves which stimulate parts of the inner ear responsible for balance, motion and spatial orientation. They provoke symptoms similar to motion sickness. Many families had to leave their homes selling them at a loss.

The "Flicker Effect" might not sound bad, but it can destroy a homeowner's quality of life for several hours a day. Shadow flicker is the effect caused on a home when the sun shines through the rotating blades of a wind turbine, casting a moving shadow. It will be perceived as a “flicker” due to the rotating blades repeatedly casting the shadow. This phenomenon will severely affect people living nearby as well as any grazing animals and wildlife in its path.

Other Local Governments Have Restricted Wind Turbines

The database in the link provides the names of towns and government entities that have rejected or restricted wind projects since 2015. This database is updated as local governments around the country take action against these innappriately placed projects in their backyards.
